Getting approved for surplus food collections: charities and individuals

How charities and individual Surplus Saviours can apply to collect surplus food

This article explains how to get approved to collect surplus food on Neighbourly. The process differs depending on whether you are a charity or an individual.

I am a charity — how do I get approved?

To apply as a charity:

  • Create or log in to your Neighbourly page and ensure it includes your charity number, service details, food distribution model, and community impact information
  • Upload a current Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (dated within the last 3 years) or provide a link to your FSA rating (must be level 3 or above)
  • Include recent press coverage and social media links demonstrating your community work

Once submitted, the vetting team aims to review your application within 1 week, though this may take longer during busy periods. After approval, wait 24 hours then check for available collection slots at neighbourly.com/myinkind/goodcause/scheduleslots. Do not collect from stores until you have received a confirmation email and a notification that a donation is available.

I am an individual — how do I become a Surplus Saviour?

Members of the public can collect surplus food as a Surplus Saviour. To apply:

  • Create a Neighbourly account
  • From your home dashboard, scroll to 'Surplus Saviour collections' and click 'More info'
  • Click 'Activate' and agree to the Individual Collector Agreement, Food Safety Agreement, and Platform Expectations
  • Click 'Apply for slots' to apply for collections in your local area

The team will review your application and notify you by email, typically within a week.

How do I get a food hygiene certificate?

Search online for 'Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene training' or ask your local council. Short courses are available online and can be completed in 2–3 hours.
